Vocal Technique
One misconception is that since we are born with a
voice that we use on a daily basis, we wont need any training to be a
successful singer. In fact the muscles and techniques used to speak are
greatly different from those required for singing. If we were to pick up
a guitar or a saxophone, we would probably assume that some form of
tuition would be essential before reaching a level of ability required
to perform in front of an audience. For most, singing without at least
knowing something about your instrument can result in:
- Weak areas in vocal
- A lack of self-awareness of your true output
- Hitting bum notes
- Straining the voice resulting in damaged vocal chords in the future
- Unpleasant e.g. thin reedy tone
In order to make the most of the natural talent you already have, get
the basics right, and the rest will follow naturally. Of course, many
vocalists come along with a specific problem that needs sorting, most
common is give my voice more power! because pushing harder is not the
answer unless you want to cultivate some of those nasty nodes or want a
voice that might crack at any moment. So, its back to basics, ensuring
the right techniques are being employed in all the right areas.
Coaching Covers:
- posture
- breathing
- communication
- mouth-shapes
- tone
- weekly routines
- warming up
Working on these, as with other instruments, does take practice and time
but will result in an overall improvement in your voice, giving you more
confidence and hence a better opportunity to perform to your best. |
